The United Church of Christ has a long history of educational excellence. We believe that life-long learning is important and offer a variety of educational opportunities for all ages.
EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH
+Nursery Childcare (Sundays from 9:45-11:15 am for infants-2 yr olds)
Our Nursery Childcare room is a safe and loving environment staffed by faithful members of the Boise First Community. Age-appropriate comfort, play and gentle learning is tailored to meet the needs of each child. All members of our childcare team are loving and kind, well known in our church and have passed our denomination’s background checks.
Sunday School (Sundays from 10 am-approximately 10:50 am – all Sunday during the program year except the 1st Sunday of the month)
We currently have two main Sunday School classes:
Preschool (ages 3-5 yrs old) – led by experienced Preschool teacher Lee Hipsher
Godly Play Classroom (1st-5th/6th grade) – led by Godly Play teachers Jen Nelson and Nikki Leonard.
The preschool classroom uses an adaptation of the UCC Curriculum Faith Practices as well as additional material adapted by Lee Hipsher. The Godly Play Classroom uses the Godly Play Curriculum to help introduce our children to the joys of the Christian faith. We are so excited about this program – as are the children and their families!
We try to have the Sunday School join us for the end of worship – but often they are so busy with their activities that they make it in just in time to help us close the service.
On the First Sunday of the Month we all share together in an Intergenerational Communion Service, with the children taking key parts in the liturgy and a Godly Play story speaking to the child in all of us. We all look forward to those Sundays!
Some families prefer to keep their children in church – all children of any age are always welcome in worship!
What a joy it is to hear God’s still speaking voice through the voices of our babies and children!
+Pilgrim Cove Camp (Our UCC Camp in McCall, Idaho)
Our church supports a variety of experiences at Pilgrim Cove Camp on Lake Payette, in McCall, Idaho, including a week-long camp for children in elementary-high school. Watch our website, Weekend Update, and Facebook page for information on upcoming activities at Pilgrim Cove Camp.
+Under the Tent of Abraham (formerly Peace Village)
This is an interfaith experience for children ages 6-14 from the major Abrahamic Religions that explores emotional awareness and modulation, non-violent conflict resolution and peacemaking while exploring the shared heritage and unique differences found in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This camp is a collaborative undertaking among our church and Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel and the Islamic Center of Boise. Our three congregations also sponsor quarterly gatherings to bring the three congregations together to build relationships and learn more about the other religions. For more information, go to the Under the Tent of Abraham website.
Confirmation is a nine-month program during which High School students can work with Pastor Kim and each other to gain a deeper understanding of the progressive Christian Faith and of their own individual beliefs. It is a time of self awareness and discovery as well as a time to consider making a formal commitment to the church community. Sacred time – a time of questions – a time of wonder – a time of discovery – a time of transformation!
+Programs for Junior and Senior High School
Currently we do not have a Sunday School class for Jr. or Sr. High youth – due mostly to the scheduling conflicts they have with Sunday mornings. We instead provide a UCC Adventure Club that meets later on Sunday afternoons and combines fun activities with learning and service.
+Sunday Mornings at 11:15 am
A variety of topics and issues are discussed during these Adult Education sessions, which are held many Sundays and typically go for 45 minutes. Please check the “What’s Happening” page on this website, our Facebook page, or contact the church office for information about upcoming Sunday morning Adult Education programs.
+Faith Explorations – Mondays at Noon
Led by the Rev. Dr. Douglas Lobb, this group explores contemporary biblical scholarship, ethics, and new discoveries in archaeology and history as they pertain to progressive Christianity. They use books, DVDs, and articles to help learn about the newest research into the life and times of Jesus. You are welcome to join this group if you enjoy being challenged by diverse ideas about religion and faith. The group meets for approximately 90 minutes each Monday at noon.
+Special Study Opportunities
Throughout the year there are special study opportunities available, such as a Lenten Study, Bible Study and thematic studies connected to current events. Please check the “What’s Happening” page on this website, our Facebook page, the church newsletter and our other forms of announcements for information about upcoming Special Studies.
